Yes, when plugged into any computer it uses standard USB capabilities (no drivers needed), to connect to the computer and presents as a DVD writer to the operating system without any installation needed. However, also included in the box is a DVD with Cyberlink Media Suite included. (I haven't tried this on a Mac computer, but I have installed it on Windows computers, and if this software is installed, it may help in playing movies on DVD by providing needed video codecs and/or encryption decoding support.)
