I can answer part of your questions. It is designed to read and write most cd and dvd formats.... I'm a mac user so I don't know if it will work with your crome book... You would need a usb port and if it has that there is a good chance it will work for you.. I bought mine precisely for the reason that I like "hard" back-ups and macs don't come with built-in disc drives anymore. The unit comes with a disc of software for pc style unit management.....I find that this unit is a great value for the money, so if you have a usb input- go for it!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can burn CDs or DVDs with the LG - 8x External USB Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - Black, Model # SP80NB80, however, there are some major limitations to using it with a Chrome Book. Chrome OS can read files on CD, CD-RW, DVD and DVD-RW discs if they are a supported file formats. This means you can easily open image or audio files in ChromeOS from files on a CD or DVD. However, Chromebooks do not have the necessary codecs to plays DVD files. You can connect a CD or DVD player on a Chromebook and use it to read data files if you have a disk written in data format above but you cannot cannot play an audio CD or a movie on a DVD, and you cannot write anything to a CD, or DVD. External DVD drives aren’t officially supported on Chrome OS...^IFV
