“Salesman said "just plug it into computer & it starts working" . Bought it -- no instructions included. Plug it into computer and no instructions/choices come up, it just sits there as if not connected. Can anyone tell a tech-idiot how to use this?”

I had the same issue after purchasing this today. I eventually used a different usb port and opened the drive and reset the disc as it was not snapped into place. Then the operating system showed up onscreen. Hope you found an answer.

The LG - 8x External USB Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive, Model # SP80NB80 should have come with installation instructions and a supplied software CD that you would need to insert into the drive to install the software.
