The LG - 8x External USB Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - Black, Model # SP80NB80 will work the same way that an built-in DVD drive works if you had one in your laptop. It attaches to your laptop via USB and it is compatible with Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP Operating Systems. When connected to your laptop, it appears as a another drive on your laptop and when you insert software in the drive, you can select that software to download and install it on your laptop. ^Daphane

Yes. I was able to view and use the CD that had the installation files for my new printer.
