I used this with a desktop PC and it was a plug and play. I have tried a different brand in the past on a laptop and as you indicate, there was sounds coming from it but it wasn't being recognized by the laptop. The packaging indicates if there are issues with installing the product to call 800-243-0000. I would go that route before returning it to the place of purchase. Hope this helps.

You can read CD, CD-RW, DVD, and DVD-RW files if they are written in data or media format. You can copy files off it to your drive as long as they are actual media files, not CD music or DVD videos, or you can also play media files directly from the disc. You can read the information on a disk as long as it’s in an accepted format, but you cannot write information to it. Chrome OS does not support optical disks to let you play music or movies. The primary reason for this is that Chrome OS doesn’t come with codecs. Codecs are necessary to compress and decompress large files like DVD videos. If you want to play DVDs on your Chromebook, you’ll need to install Linux. Chrome OS doesn’t include any ripping software so you cannot rip music or movies. ^CP
