A:AnswerI tried plugging directly to smart tv, it didn't work. Shared a dvd between tv and my laptop while having player attached to laptop. The tv and laptop were connected with hdmi cord.

Re the software, question, I believe set-up instructions include a link to where you can download 2 or 3 utilities, including burning s/w. No s/w CD comes in the package.
