From what you have stated regarding your HDD and the unused interface cabling, I am going to guess that you have that capability. Windows 7 should have a built-in driver that will work with the new drive.

By design, all newer SATA standards are backwards compatible with older SATA standards and will fall back to the slower speed such that they will work. This is a power supply issue not a SATA version issue...^IFV
