• It can be separate. When I am in my tablet it stays in the slot. But I use it for my iPhone and I lay it next to the keyboard.

• We use this keyboard with our Surface tablet whose original keyboard quit working. Nothing has to be in the slot. Our Surface sits propped up as designed with the keyboard independent from it.

• its bluetooth, you can have the device 10 feet away from the keyboard if you like. The slot is just an option for convenience.
