Some older wireless mice might not work with newer laptops. Husband bought brand new laptop (February 2017) and only 2 of the 6 or more USB ports on the laptop would work with the unifying receiver. Because there are so many different types of USB ports now: USB 2.0; 3.0; superspeeds aka SS (USB 3.1 for 5 GB, for 10 GB and so on...) So it really depends. I recommend shopping around and asking a lot of questions.
