Yes. using the thumb for me is so precise. With the right mouse speed settings, you can be very precise and also cover multiple screen real estate without requiring absolute minimum arm movement. Hand rests on body of the devices - no clutching or griping that aggravates carpal tunnel or arthritic conditions.

Yes it does involve the thumb. You use your thumb to move the trackball and your index and middle finger to click the switches.

I have used this mouse for almost since it was first introduced. It does involve the thumb to move the roller ball. I have not heard of anyone getting arthritis due to this. It is designed to be fully ergonomic to minimize risk of arthritis.

It depends on what trackball you buy. I have the Logitech M570 which is operated by the thumb and despite extensive use (several hours every day),
I feel a lot less strain than with a normal mouse and nothing in my thumb. I tried to go back to a normal mouse and I quickly felt it in my wrist.
You can however get many other trackballs that are operated by other digits.

That may pose a problem for some but if it doesnt the comfort of your wrist will be noticed right away.

Yes. Usually to hit the button "to click" or to select. I barely use much energy with thumb. I prefer trackball to standard mouse. Hope that helps.
