My experience is it tracks well without a pad. Great product.

Never have to lift mouse and set back down to go distance of one screen and really two travel from left side all the way to far right of 2nd 27 " samsung moniter, takes a 4 maybe 5 inch arc, comfortable to hold and 6 function buttons and two wheels, takes a little adjustmeny and fine tuning period, but rocketship, super star time saver within 2 days, i use it for 3seperate computers on two desks, solid hold buy, i am usually left unfulfilled when i buy electronics and accessories, this little bugger rips
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I've found it to track just as accurately on both a pad and on my wooden desk. If you're finding that it doesn't track well on your surface, a pad can certainly be helpful.

The only surface that has trouble from time to time seems to be glass. For ergonomic purposes, I would always recommend some kind of pad however this mouse will work without one.
