Cortana doesn't hear you through the speakers. It hears you through a microphone. On a desktop, you need a freestanding mic so that Cortana will work. Most laptops have a built-in mic. If you don't have a mic, Cortana will not hear you but you can type your input to it. Most desktops have a cheap speaker built in, so you will be able to hear Cortana. If you add speakers, Cortana will sound better, but the built-in speaker will be ok. the short answer is that you don't need speakers, but you do need a mic. The cheapest mic you can get will do.
