Yes, you can play music from a smartphone, that is my primary use of this. I have the non bluetooth model, so I had purchased a cable that has a 3.5 mm jack on one end for the smartphone, and RCA inputs on the other end for the speaker system. The sound quality is outstanding, even with using a cable.
