• Yes, you can play music from a smartphone, that is my primary use of this. I have the non bluetooth model, so I had purchased a cable that has a 3.5 mm jack on one end for the smartphone, and RCA inputs on the other end for the speaker system. The sound quality is outstanding, even with using a cable.

• Hello JD. You can connect your phone to the Z533 via 3.5mm auxiliary cable. The speakers do require power, so you will still need to plug it into the wall.
