Before this update, the company required users to insert a physical Water Bypass Filter Plug to operate the water dispenser or ice maker without an active filter installed. An LG refrigerator's built-in water bypass allows water to flow to the dispenser and ice maker without passing through a water filter cartridge. How it functions depends on your specific model type. Many of our current LG refrigerators feature an automatic shut-off valve in the filter manifold. When you twist and pull the old filter out, the manifold automatically opens an internal pathway so water can flow directly from the supply line to the dispenser without needing an extra plug. To test if your specific model uses a built-in water bypass, remove your water filter and press the dispenser paddle. If water flows normally, your fridge utilizes an automatic bypass.
