“After the year is up, do I have to renew or will the program continue to work?”

it will not work after it expires. some people try to back date your computer's date and leaving it unplugged/disconnected from internet to fool the program but program periodically checks for license validation online and will stop working if you are not connected online.

You have to renew. It will barrage you with your subscription is about to expire, then after it expires, you cant open/view/edit/create any documents

You will get an email letting you know that your year is up and you can renew online plus you can call into Best Buy and set up a automatic renewal with credit card if you want.

You can choose to have it auto-renew and charge you or prompt you to pay ahead of the expiration date. It's in your Microsoft account settings.
