I would return it back to the store you purchased it. Have them swap it out and then give you a new card that has the code. I ran into similiar and I took mine back to Best Buy as suggested by Microsoft. Best Buy refunded / swapped out for a new card for the 5 subscription. I took it home and installed and everything went fine for my Mac laptop, iPhone, and other devices.

This happened to me and Best Buy salesperson did not activate it. I took it back and the staff reimburse me cost / bought another one (basically an exchange). I took that one home and activated it without an issue. I think once you leave the store and it is not activated the creates as issue that Best Buy has to handle. The MS person told me to take it back to them and they likely would swap out for another. They were correct.
