“How much does Office 365 Personal software cost if bought from MS site one time? And if bought will I need to update myself? What is difference in buying as opposed to subscribing? I'm trying to justify the yearly cost of subscription. What extra service?”

They usually don't let you access the features if you don't subscribe yearly

If you subscribe to Office 365 then you get updates as well as access to 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage and other benefit. Office 2019 is a one time purchase that will get you access to the Office products included in your purchase but will not receive new updates.
