Windows 11 S mode is not automatically activated when you install a standard retail copy of the operating system yourself. S mode is a specific configuration of Windows that is usually pre-installed and activated by the device manufacturer (OEM) on brand-new computers, typically those marketed as educational laptops, budget-friendly models, or highly secure devices. The manufacturer decides whether the device ships in S mode. If you purchase a device that comes with "Windows 11 Home in S mode" pre-loaded, then S mode is already active from the moment you first turn on the computer. If you build your own PC or install Windows 11 on an existing machine using an installation media tool, it will install the full version of Windows 11 Home or Pro, and S mode will not be an option or active by default.
