My son went on a walk around our neighborhood one end of which is quite higher than the other, could be called hilly, and was talking to me on it the whole time. It was mostly fine except around the 1/2 mile range when the feed broke a little.

It is hard for us to speak to specific landscape questions, but this hilly terrain would likely fall in the "medium range" aka partial obstruction to line of sight. The T31VP can get up to 26 mile range with no line of sight obstructions. With that in mind, your daughter should be able to communicate under the conditions described!
