Best buy can look it up if you paid by a charge card or debit card or if you are a rewards member they can look it up and see how long you have had it and warranty it accordingly

If you have a receipt for the cable only, I'd imagine they would replace it even if your device is out of warranty. Easiest way to get the cable replaced is to take it to the Genius bar. Honestly, I pretty well always have at least one device under warranty so I've never had an issue getting them replaced easily in the Apple Store. Hope that helps.
