Will it charge an iPhone xs null

I have an 8 plus and it works great. I bought another brand got home did not work even took the case off and did not work. I had read review saying it did. So this time before leaving the store with the help of the clerk. We check it out with my case on (outtrtbox) and it worked great. I then ordered one for my wife and she has not had any problems. Why did we not do this when they came out.
