You do not need to be a new customer you can be current custermers or not a custermers at all but if you buy it to use later and not a sprint user it will cost you $40 more . Your can transfer your number over to it that's what I did .

Just buy the phone and activate it on your current Sprint number, either by calling customer care, via Sprint's website or following the activation prompts/guide when you turn on the phone.
