Where the D3400 excels is in it's ability to be as versatile a camera as you need it to me. Since it's lenses are interchangeable, you can purchase additional lenses as your abilities and creative pursuits change. If you are only talking about astrophotography - the capabilities of a the COOLPIX P900 with it's amazing zoom are very difficult to beat. With the D3400, since the camera does have a larger sensor, it will be better at capturing photos, with less noise, in lower light situations.
