The D5300 does not have a built-in focus motor. It relies on lenses that have a built-in motor. Nikon denotes these type of lens with an AF-S designator. It incorporates Nikon's Silent Wave Focusing Motor. Older film-type lenses do not have this. While the lens would attach to the camera, you would have operate the lens manually in all aspects. Depending on the lens, that would also include Manual exposure.
