The x that is before the "8" refers to the magnification of the binoculars while the number of "42" after the x refers to the diameter size of the objective bell. The larger the objective size the more light you can let in, which helps when in a low light scenario. The MONARCH 5 8x42 binocular has high resolution to provide brighter, more natural looking images due to the use of ED (Extra-low light) glass but is not offered in a 10x50 size.
