What 8 by 42 means ¿ null

The 8 is the magnification lens and 42 is objective lens diameter.

8 means something looks 8 times bigger. Look at something 40 meters away, it will be as large as if you were 5 meters away. 42 means how bright the image will be, compared to say 8x30, nearly twice as bright. Better if looking at bird buried back in a tree, less important for sports.
