Would I be able to keep the adapter on a lens as opposed to on the camera? I'm thinking of getting a z8 with a new lens, but want to keep my old 14-24mm lens. I would rather just keep the adapter on the old lens as opposed to on the camera. null

I keep mine on the zoom lens as that's what I switch to more often. Works great.

Yes that is possible. But do ensure you are covering the back contact points of the adapter. It comes with the adapter. While mounting practice putting camera on the lens instead of lens on the camera. 
Lastly, you can also do this prior you leave for shooting. All depends upon your workflow
