Some games support any amiibo for extra bonus which this amiibo should work for whether or not Wii U, 3DS, or Switch. As for specific games, it may unlock special functions in Mario Odyssey which is out in 2 weeks or the new Mario & Luigi game for 3DS.

With that said it still has limited functionality on the switch. I'd say buy it as an adornment, something that looks pretty on display. This guy won't be seeing much game time due to how little he can help you.

In this particular case, and as of this writing, the Goomba amiibo primarily functions with Super Mario Odyssey for Switch, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions for Nintendo 3DS. It does, however, also provide small benefits in a number of other games with Amiibo support that offer small bonuses if an Amiibo they don't fully support is scanned. (For example, Zelda Breath of the Wild offers a bundle of inventory items when a Goomba is scanned.) Nintendo's site offers information on which amiibo work best for which games.

Please try again later.As of right now, the only use that the Koopa and Goomba amiibo have would be in "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions" for 3DS, which they have read/write features. Otherwise they can be used in any game that uses amiibo to receive random gifts regardless of which amiibo is used.

So to answer your question, Yes it can be used for the Wii U, but this specific amiibo is catered/made for the Nintendo 3DS game "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions" as well as the upcoming release "Super Mario Odyssey" for the Nintendo Switch. It works on all NFC equipped Nintendo Consoles but their functionality are unknown to me since I do not own either game.
