No. The case does not have to be removed...at least not my Apple Leather one.

I have the Apple-branded leather case on my iPhone 8 and it does not need to be removed to charge. It works on this charger as well as a couple of other puck-style wireless chargers I own.

I have the Platinum leather wallet-type case and the charger works fine through the case. I’m very pleased with the phone and watch charger.

No, as long as the case isn't too thick it should work fine.
