The Otterbox case sides extend and provides a bumper on all four sides of the phone so the glass screen is recessed and will not make contact on a flat surface when the phone is face down.

There is a small lip that raises above the screen that would protect if dropped flat on the screen. No protection for an impact directly to the screen.

As you noted, there is no screen protection in this OtterBox model. There is a bit of a lip that rolls around the extreme edge of the screen, so there will be some protection from that. A vertical, screen-down flat drop shouldn't make for a problem, but if the screen lands on a projection you may end up with damage.

There is a small lip around the phone when the case is on it. This will be some protection but I wanted more so bought a screen protector. I recommend you do that also.

Not with this case. I have a Zagg screen protector on mine to keep the front protected. Lifrproof makes a case that completely encloses the phone
