“I just now opened the box after purchasing it. There is no cord for connecting to a computer in order to download photos. The instruction manual does not mention what type of cord I need. The cord is not mentioned as an accessory either.”

The USB cable that comes with the camera is only for charging the battery. My understanding is that one cannot transfer data through that kind of connection.
