Not a good idea to record someone without their consent, but to answer your question. The red light turns on when record button is pressed. It doesn’t playback automatically. I’m not sure about the beep when it’s done recording, but each time I’ve used it, I have to physically press the button to stop recording. However, if the battery dies, it might make a sound when powering off.
