Hello! Thanks for your question. For this Pioneer VSX‑S520, the subwoofer must be powered (active). This receiver provides a subwoofer pre‑out (line‑level signal only) and does not supply power for a passive subwoofer. We recommend using a powered subwoofer for proper performance and compatibility.
