“We connected out digital antennae to this splitter input. One output we have a coaxial cable into our TV in the LR. The other is empty -- for now. We are getting NO signal on the tV and I'm wondering whether we can't leave the line empty?”

Have you attempted running straight to the TV to see if the antenna is actually picking up any channels? I'd attempt to verify the antenna is picking up content first. Once you know its actually is working go from there. It should be able to function fine without two devices connected.
