The case sticks out beyond the phone for protection and also beyond the screen protector. The screen protector is very thin, but strong and is stuck to the phone with a special adhesive. These are two separate things the case and the screen protector. And the case does stick out enough that even with a screen protector on the phone there is a bit of airspace about the thickness of a credit card.
