The 12" depth is to allow for the microwave door to open. You could get away with 13 3/4" and yes, you could mount a frame on your back wall to move the unit out.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.In addition to my previous answer, if you do not vent the unit outside (through ducting), it vents (through a filter) into the kitchen and the vents are on top of the unit--which requires at least 1 1/2" of free space.
