what is the purpose of the wifi? null

I have not bothered to set it up yet. This appliance has a lot of features and it may be easier to set the options via app vs the touch commands.

Wifi uses samsung smartthings app that allows another interface with the mw. It also is used for repair diagnostics, and also automatically resets the clock after a power outage.
