Why are halogen bulbs used? null

Better question, how in heck to install a replacement?! The design is so poor for reaching in, even with small hands, only 2" of space. The manual says 20W halogen, but no mention of bulb "type", the G8 I bought will NOT go into either of the 2 light sockets. Anyone who's replaced got any tips? Downloaded manual - offered no further help. This should be so simple.
