Assuming that you have a High Definition box from DirecTV and not a standard definition "converter box" then yes, you would need an HDMI cable in order to get the best picture quality possible. You can probably make the connection using a component cable (assuming your box has that as an option), and while it will carry an HD signal, it won't be as sharp or clear as an HDMI. Look for an HDMI 1.3 cable. You can find them on the web for pretty cheap depending on the length you want. Just don't fall for the "monster cables are better" and "it has to be solid gold connectors". Unless your pushing to a 120" screen and the cable is 30 feet long, you won't notice a difference at all.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.CBF, Make sure that you have a HD box - not all cable/satellite boxes will be high definition boxes. If not, you may need to upgrade in order to get a HD source picture. Also, make sure your HD box is sending a 720p or higher signal through the video output. Your cable/sat service carrier would be able to assist in making sure that's happening. HDMI and Component (Red/Blue/Green video, + red/white audio) is recommended. Either one will deliver a HD signal. Thanks for your support of Samsung products. If we can help further, please reach out to us or the Best Buy Geek Squad Agents in your area.
