Hello Butch, there are multiple ways to start a cycle on this microwave. I'll recommend you use the Sensor Cooking buttons that let you cook favorite foods using preset power levels and times at the touch of a button (see the instructions here https://bit.ly/2LOrtB3 (page 18-20)) or the +30 sec button (see the instructions here https://bit.ly/2LOrtB3 (page 14)). ^Jefry
