Hi Hfisher, Thanks for your question. You can remove the filter from the RF260BEAESP and continue to use the ice maker. However, Samsung recommends using an external filtration system if you don't use the internal system to prevent mineral deposits or debris from building up in the refrigerator's water lines over time. - Ms. Samsung
