Hi Bodman, Thank you for reaching out, and we hope you are in good health. We appreciate your interest in Samsung home appliances, specifically with Samsung - 28 cu. ft. Large Capacity 3-Door French Door Refrigerator - Stainless steel. Models designed for use with the AquaPure water filter are shipped with a cap in place to cover the opening and keep it free of debris prior to the installation of the water filter. On most models it is not necessary to have this cap in place for the unit to bypass the filter nor is it intended to plug the housing to prevent leaks. Most Samsung water and ice dispensers will work without an AquaPure water filter installed. The water filter housings are designed as rotary valves that allow the water to bypass the water filter whenever there is no filter or the filter is not in the locked position.
