It uses high heat. Steam loosens up baked on particles; whereas high heat turns them to ash. Personally I have never and will likely never use the self cleaning feature. With either cleaning method, you have to go back and wipe up the mess once the oven has turned it to ash or loosened it. Regardless of the self-cleaning process, you're still left cleaning!
