Yes you can have it as a free standing unit. That is how I have mine set up.

This means the lower vents under the door were designed to vent the heat in a forward direction so you can place the unit in an enclosed space which adds cost to the unit. The exterior is stainless steel on the front with black finish on sides since it was designed to be enclosed. If these meet your needs then it can be used free-standing.
