Yes you can have it as a free standing unit. That is how I have mine set up.

Yes, can be used as a free standing unit. But consider the following: This unit is a great unit but designed to be enclosed. This means the lower vents under the door were designed to vent the heat in a forward direction so you can place the unit in an enclosed space which adds cost to the unit. The exterior is stainless steel on the front with black finish on sides since it was designed to be enclosed. If these meet your needs then it can be used free-standing.
