“I have 40mm, M8, 1.25 pitch screws. These screws slide (with no resistance) almost all the way into holes on the back of the tv. Only a small amount of the screw will actually screw into the hole. Is that how it is supposed to be?”

It is all dependent on your mounting bracket and any washers or spacers. I had to use 60MM bolts. The first few MM's is just an empty hole and then the threads start deeper in. You can't get them too long or you can go through the back of the hole into the guts of the TV. I used a wooden dowel that fit in the hole and after laying all the parts of the bracket on the back I slipped the dowel into the hole and marked it off. I then got bolts that were slightly shorter than that and things worked well. The rest of the bolt is spot on M8 1.25 pitch. Hope that helps.
