I'm not a 100% on this one, since I don't use a cable box, though if the TV can recognize your cable box then the TV remote should allow you to control your system (only 1 remote required with my setup and loving it). If the TV can't recognize your cable system, then it would be a function of it your cable remote a line of sight unit (infrared) vs a radio waves setup that would allow you to have it out of sight?

If you would like to continue to use your cable providers remote, you will need line of sight to the box for continued control. ^Tim
