well this is just a guess but I'm pretty sure people are resorting to mounting tvs due to their rapid increase of larger selections and decreasing of said prices. Also, when having such a wide TV, it would be encumbersome to buy a large piece of furniture to place it on. Finally, it looks more modern on a wall, especially considering the fact that you can purchase adjustable mounts which provides the most comfortable viewing angle.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Tablet top stands that attach at the wall mounts on the TV are sold now. It makes the footprint way smaller. Just saw them for sale, not sure if they are great. It's an option.

Please try again later.Just a heads up considering i actually see a lot of people upset over this issue, but there's honestly hundreds of options for center based stands that just screw right into the mounting threaded holes on the back of the TV. Ofcourse like most TV accessories you can find them for dirt cheap or get something decent that can support an 80-100lb TV..... but its a lot of weight rocking back and forth on that single centered base for a bigger/heavier tv so I'm sure as the TV's grew most manufacturers just wanted to avoid that liability issue and just go with the more sturdy option.
