It is in my observance that ALL technology gives backwards compatibility for a little time for those of us that like to stay in our old ways. However this is a window that is given to let you know that soon your system/components will no longer be supported by the manufacturer. Technology has been evolving so quickly that something that had been released a generation or two ago may have been deemed irrelevant by the current standard. In all, upgrading is inevitable.
