A phone will charge in some cases it just depends on the phone case. I have charged in an otterbox commuter case and an off brand clear case. My husband has a thicker off brand knock off case and it won't charge. It also will not charge with a pop socket or with a metal plate in the middle for the magnetic mounts.

No, your phone does not have to be in contact with the charging pad in order to charge. To be even clearer.......I own the iPhone 8 Plus that I keep in a leather case. All I have to do, is set the phone, still in its case on the charging pad. It charges through the case. And at a fast pace too. Not disappointed with this charger at all.
