what is unlocked phone null

I was under the impression that an UNLOCKED phone was an ADVANTAGE, but I am have come to find out that this phone, does NOT hold synching with a BLUETOOTH, and a LOCKED phone to the Carrier Company is preferable, although phone companies themselves claim that the ADVANTAGE is that you are FREE to take your phone with you to any CARRIER!
